The Matheran Trip
Getting up at 5 in the morning is not the easiest thing to do especially if you have my habit of waking up at 11 on a daily basis. However such miracles do happen, on occasions similar to today’s: The Matheran trip. I got up at 5.15 and was ready in less than 15 minutes. The Iciness of the morning air was frigidly amazing as it struck me on my face. I can imagine what my sister would be feeling who was driving the activa to the Shivaji Nagar station. We were accompanied by Jayesh and Avatar, two of my sister’s colleagues from DRDO. We took the first local to Karjat and then another to Narel.
A toy train is available from Narel to Matheran . But seeing a big huddle for the toy train tickets, we decided to hire a taxi. We reached Matheran in 20 minutes max and there began our ‘trekking’! It wasn’t the usual trekking though, all we had to do was follow the toy train tracks as it curved through the Matheran hills.
It wasn’t the best thing to do but we had no choice...We had yet to reach the main Matheran town and the only way to do that was trekking on foot or on horse backs. We decided not to trouble the horses and make it to the top on foot. But the sun was high in the sky by 10 am and it got unbearably hot as we hurried to the top. In about half an hour, we finally reached the ‘Matheran Market Area’, the place where the toy train terminates. It was time we ate something, cos the 2 Vada Paos each of us had eaten in the locals didn’t prove to be enough. Poha and a Thumbs Up! That what we ordered and it got us rolling again as we set out to explore Matheran now that we were finally there. One prominent part of Matheran is the ‘horse’ cos you are going to see hundreds of them being used by locals to carry the tourists around for a good amount of cash. We however continued on foot and went on to see the various ‘points’, places of ecstatic scenic beauty. The only thing that prevented us from having fun was the hot weather. We had later decided it would have been a much better experience if we had come further in winters. Anyways, our last ‘point’ was the ‘Charlotte lake’ & ‘Lord’s point’.
Then we began our return journey, all spent after the whole trekking. We booked tickets in the 1:50 pm dept. Toy train for Neral from where we returned to Pune via the Konark express. It may not have been the best trip I’ve had but it sure created many firsts: I ate 5 Vada Paos in a single day in this journey! I was also caught travelling in sleeper (konark Exp) with general ticket for the very first time. Travelling in a toy train was also a first and finally having fun with my sister on a trip after so many years was priceless!!! :)
