India loses a brave daughter...What now?
Everyone knows what I would be talking
about, this being the most debated and reported issue for the past few weeks.
Yes, we lost an innocent girl and yes this is not the first time, but there
always has to be a first time to bring about a revolution. Delhi remains to be
the rape capital of India and what the government, police and even us for that
matter are doing about it! NOTHING...this is the point blank truth. We live in
a country where Government looks at everyone as a vote bank (not as citizens)
and even women in power are not ready to change. The police is arrogant and has
a unique obsolete mindset. A Tehelka sting
aimed at 23 police stations across the NCR reveals a level of misogyny that is
not unexpected, but is shocking nevertheless. According to their
stringent criteria, almost all women deserve to be raped. And here’s why:
Worst of all, there is a section of people in India who is so
old school that they still expect the Indian women to act as if we still live
in the medieval ages. Who are they to expect something of someone! Times have
changed and we live in a free country. Why get bounded by the shackles of a
belief system that hasn't even been able to check crimes against women for so
many decades!
Can we really rely on such a government, such a police and such
a society! The hard truth is we have no other option and there is no way out.
It’s something we have to live with. Now you ask, is there really no
option left. I say there is but one. We need rigorous, absolute and
effective reforms everywhere.
Just to name a few, we need a Government that is
humble enough to accept its failures and work upon them to ensure they don’t
happen again. We need a Prime Minister/President to be dynamic enough to
address the nation in rough times and imbibe confidence among the citizens like
leaders do! We also need exhaustive Police reforms. All rape complaints must be
registered with compulsory video recording. If local police doesn’t register
the case or fails to act after registering, a 24 hour helpline for women must
be available on a regional or national level to report such cases of bad
policing! The police needs to be given more powers so that not just any neta/MP
etc can influence its proceedings.
As for the
society, well I am most optimistic on this front because the society is
changing and the incident in question is further driving the change. Why do
rape victims feel guilty for being the victim of a crime? It’s our society, that
has to understand that rape is as heinous a crime as murder and needs to give as harsh
a punishment as it would give to a murderer.
